A brief Historyof Letchworth Village

Founding and Vision (1911)
Established in 1911 in Thiells, Rockland County, NY, Letchworth Village was conceived as a forward-thinking institutional community for individuals with developmental disabilities, from infants to the elderly. It was named after William Pryor Letchworth, a humanitarian advocate for better care of the marginalized. Designed as a self-sustaining farming “village”, it replaced high-rise asylums with low-rise cottages, spread across over 2,300 acres. Patients worked the land, cared for livestock, and crafted toys.

Transformation and Decline
Despite lofty ideals, the institution became severely overcrowded early on. The growing population strained resources, resulting in neglect, physical and sexual abuse, and other serious failings. In the 1950s, it played a key role in early polio vaccine testing, administering experimental doses to child residents under Dr. Hilary Koprowski and Dr. George Jervis. The 1960s–70s brought heightened scrutiny of institutional mental healthcare. The facility became emblematic of systemic failures, culminating in a nationwide push toward deinstitutionalization. In 1972, a high-profile ABC exposé by Geraldo Rivera spotlighted dire conditions, galvanizing reform and public outrage.

Closure and Aftermath
Closed in 1996, residents were relocated to community-based settings. Many of the buildings have since decayed, leaving behind a
haunting landscape. One cemetery off-site contains over 900 unclaimed residents from 1914–1967, marked only by numbered steel posts. Another more recent cemetery is still being utilized today. In 2007 a memorial stone was erected to honor those buried at the older cemetery. Portions of the property have been redeveloped: a golf course and Veterans Memorial Park occupy part, while other buildings serve as offices, recreation centers, a school, or remain abandoned.
